Welcome to Seattle Maharashtra Mandal

We are a non-profit charitable organization (501(c)(3)) serving the Greater Seattle population. Our mission is to promote the Marathi cultural and religious ties within the community, to promote events and activities that help maintain the Marathi cultural heritage of Maharashtra, a western state in India. We also invest back in the community by hosting charity events.


Upcoming Events

Sports Day on February 13, 2010

SMM is inviting all those sportspersons out there to participate in the upcoming Sports day. We will be conducting tournaments of games like Chess (Rapid, Doubles), Table Tennis. And for those who would just like casual playing we have games like basketball, foosball, pool etc. And then there will be games for Kids as well.

So even if you are not a sportperson, just be there to cheer your friends or family. We need active participation from each and every one of you to make this a sportsful event!

Chess tournament rules

Rapid Chess
Time limit: 5 minutes each side (10 minutes total)
Players: Single player
Rules:
1. Players are encouraged get their own boards/clocks if they prefer otherwise we will provide one for you.
2. If you touch a piece it must be moved.
3. If you make an illegal move, opponent player wins. (Illegal move is one where the piece that is being moved, may come under check or was under check or cannot be moved)
4. At the end of the 10 minutes time, if the game is still in progress, the winner will be decided by positional advantage.
5. We may give a chess clock if we are running out of time. The time will be set as 1 minute for each player.
6. Arbiter’s decision is final.

Doubles Chess
Time limit: 10 minutes each side (20 minutes total)
Players: 2 players per team will play this game.
Rules:
1. Players are encouraged get their own boards/clocks if they prefer otherwise we will provide one for you.
2. Each team player will play the alternate move for that team without discussing with your partner.
3. If you/your team members touches a piece, that piece must be moved.
4. If you/your team member make an illegal move, the opponent team wins. (Illegal move is one where the piece that is being moved, may come under check or was under check or cannot be moved)
5. At the end of the 20 minutes time, if the game is still in progress, the winner will be decided by positional advantage
6. We may give a chess clock if we are running out of time. The time will be set as 1 minute.
7. Arbiter’s decision is final.

Table Tennis

Singles and Doubles

1. Players are encouraged to get their own tennis rackets.
2. One game will be of 11 points (not 21!)
3. Each player will serve 2 points before the serve changes.
4. If a player serves a net ball (“let”), the point is replayed. (There are no limits to the number of let serves a player may serve.)
5. The server in singles can serve anywhere: short, long, straight, or cross-court. Only in doubles do you have to serve diagonally from your right court to the opponent's right court.
6. If you volley the ball while it is still above the table surface, you lose the point.
7. If you move the table, or touch it with your free hand, during the rally, you lose the point.
8. If a you or your clothing touches the net or post during the rally, you lose the point.
9. If you hit the ball twice in succession, you lose the point.
11. If your shot hits a wall, the ceiling, or misses the opponent's side of the table, you lose the point.
12. Players change ends of the table after each game.
13. The player/team who serves at the beginning of a game is the receiver at the beginning of the next game.
14. If your opponent distracts you by talking or yelling while the ball is in play, play a let.
15. At 10-10, the score is called "Deuce". A player must then win by 2 points. Alternate serves until one player has a 2-point lead.
16. The referee’s decision is final in case any arbitration is required or otherwise.

Valentine Day Special

Vidya Angolkar will supervise and SMM Yuva Mandal will babysit the children while Moms and Dads go on a date on February 14th, 2010. The YuvaMandal is going to organize children activities in case the parents want to go out on Valentine day. If you would like to register please send your details to Vidya Angolkar.
